Big breasts may be desirable for most women, but guys find it embarrassing to sport breasts that are bigger than what is considered normal. Breasts on men are considered unmanly and definitely not sexy. Most men with breasts, what is known as a medical condition called gynecomastia, suffer from self-esteem issues and find it difficult to be confident with their own bodies, which negatively affects their social life. Fortunately, gynecomastia surgery is commonly performed by surgeons to remedy the condition. You should have a basic knowledge of the procedure if you are considering this surgery.

What is Gynecomastia?

It is a medical term used for enlarged breasts in men. It is usually caused by hormonal imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. However, factors such as heredity, endoctrine disorders, chronic diseases and drug interaction may also cause gynecomastia.

Fat deposits may also cause the enlargement of breasts of some men. This condition is not technically considered as gynecomastia, but called pseudogynecomastia. Enlarged breasts due to fat deposits may not require surgery because the condition can be corrected by proper diet and exercise.

Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure

If the enlarged breasts are caused by excessive fatty tissue, a simple liposuction procedure may be sufficient to correct the problem. However, if the enlargement is caused by excess glandular tissue, a surgical procedure is required to remove the mass from the breast and to contour and flatten the chest.

An incision is usually made on the lower half of the areola or under the arm to cover any scars that may develop from the incision. Through the incision, the surgeon then removes the excess glandular tissue together with the excess fat under and around the area surrounding the areola and the sides and bottom of the breasts if required. Liposuction is often performed by surgeons to sculpt the chest and for definition.

Recovery

The surgery usually lasts for no longer than 3 hours and is considered to be a same-day outpatient procedure. Initial recovery period takes up to 10 days before one can fully resume his usual daily activities. Strenuous activities should be avoided at least until after the first 6 weeks of the surgery. To fully heal from the procedure, a period of 3 to 6 months is usually required.
