Although the measure of beauty varies in different cultures and countries, there is an underlying commonality to the diverse attributes that define beauty. These are harmony and balance of facial features. However, a good majority of us are not endowed with facial symmetry. The nose is the most common culprit. It’s too big, too long, too small or too flat. However, with rhinoplasty surgery, necessary adjustments can now be done to reshape your nose and achieve the perfect balance for your face.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery, or popularly known as a nose job, is a medical procedure performed to alter and reshape the structure of the nose both internally and externally in most cases. This procedure is popular for those who have noses that are not in harmony with the rest of the facial features. It doesn’t matter what type of nose you have, surgeons have techniques to make adjustments to give your nose the perfect shape that is in proportion to the rest of your face. It is worth noting that although nose jobs are typically performed for cosmetic or aesthetic purposes, it is also a vital procedure for those who are experiencing impaired breathing due to structural defects in the nose.

How is it done?

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed by making an incision in the skin of the nose, either from the inside or across the columella (the skin between the nostrils). If the issue only concerns excessive skin, the surgeon will only work on removing excess skin and sculpting the remaining skin for a better shape. Usually, however, rhinoplasty involves structural adjustments. This means that the surgeon will need to expose the cartilage and bone framework of the nose and sculpt it to a more desirable shape to fit the facial profile. Thereafter, the skin is stitched back into place outlining the new shape. This is typically an outpatient procedure lasting from one to two hours.

Risks and Recovery

The risks involved in rhinoplasty are similar to other cosmetic procedures such as infection, bleeding, and negative reactions to anesthesia. However, these risks rarely occur. Expect a few days to a week or two of recovery period. Your face will look worse than the pain you actually feel as bruising and swelling are typical symptoms for post-operation rhinoplasty patients.

Like any other cosmetic surgery, abroad or local, ensure that your surgeon is highly qualified and has a great deal of experience in rhinoplasty surgery. Your nose is a prominent feature of your face, thus you need to make sure that only the experts are allowed to work on it.
